Samsung To Release Android 4.3 Update For Galaxy S3 And Galaxy S4 Models Next Month

GS3 and GS4 #1

Remember the promised Android 4.2.2 update that GS3 users were to receive four months ago? An even larger update is imminent, if Samsung has anything to say about it.

Samsung announced the arrival of the coveted Android 4.3 update for both GS3 and GS4 users during the same time as their IFA announcements regarding the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Gear, a Samsung smart watch that looks to shake up the current tech industry. The Galaxy Note 3 will launch with Android 4.3 on board.

At this point, some may be asking, “What happened to the Android 4.2.2 update?” This is not a bad question to ask, since the GS3 will skip Android 4.2.2 for 4.3, which is considered to be a better update. All that Android 4.2.2 offered will be provided (plus extra) in the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, meaning that GS3 users won’t miss a thing. The Android 4.3 update will bring Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean features such as lock screen widgets, the ability to customize your lock screen with a name or statement, a new light effect in place of the former swipe lock symbol, plus additional setting toggles such as Wi-Fi hotspot, S-Beam, NFC, Driving Mode, Airplane Mode, and so on.

Android 4.2.2 Settings Toggles

From the lock screen, GS3 users will be able (with the Android 4.3 update) to play music and access their most used settings quickly, cutting down on screen power (and thus, battery). This will help conserve Samsung’s battery life that powers its devices. It is my hope that Samsung will provide a 3,000mAh+ battery in the future for the Galaxy S5 as it has now done for the Galaxy Note 3.

Some of the features of the GS4 will be passed down to the GS3, but we have yet to know which ones. The GS4 comes with an infrared blaster that can be used to turn on the television and perform touch gestures such as Air View and Air Gesture – allowing you to swipe through photos, view text messages and emails, and answer phone calls without directly touching your screen. The GS3, however, does not have the IR blaster, so we cannot be sure that these will be part of the Android 4.3 update.

While GS4 users running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean will find the 4.3 update incremental at best, GS3 users will be entertained by the Android 4.3 update and all the 4.2.2 Jelly Bean goodies they have yet to receive. Google recently announced Android 4.4 Kit Kat, and the new upgrade (perhaps provided next month along with the Nexus 5) will put Samsung users one update behind, yet again.
