In the world of technology, the iPhone 4S is the equivalent to a close to retired middle aged athlete while the HTC EVO 4G is an athlete that is in its prime And because of that, we expect the EVO 4G LTE to beat out the iPhone 4S in our classic speed comparison test. But the question, as always, is will the spec sheet agree with the real world performance? We’re about to find out, but first, lets take a quick look at the spec sheet for each phone:
|HTC EVO 4G LTE||Apple iPhone 4S|
|Screen||4.7 in SLCD2 (1280×720) 312 PPI||3.5 in Retina (960×640) 326 PPI|
|Processor||1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4||800 MHz dual-core A5|
|RAM||1 GB||512 MB|
|Storage||16 GB with microSD slot||16, 32, or 64 GB|
|Camera||8 MP rear, 1.3 MP front||8 MP rear, VGA front|
|OS||Android 4.0 with HTC Sense||iOS 5|
With double the CPU clock speed and RAM, it’s easy to understand the analogy I made earlier. But don’t think that the spec sheet always tells the whole story. Take one look at the Galaxy Nexus vs. iPhone 4S comparison and you’ll see that the spec sheet didn’t translate into real world performance there (with the iPhone coming out on top despite the Galaxy Nexus’ superior specifications). Okay, lets get right into it:
Boot up test: In this test, I turn both phones on to see which one loads up their respective operating system first. Note that the HTC EVO 4G LTE had fast boot enabled for this test.
- EVO 4G LTE: 14 seconds.
- iPhone 4S: 29 seconds.
App speed test: In this test, I open up a couple of applications (usually by the same developer) to see which phone loads it up faster giving you an idea of the app speed experience you’ll get with each.
- Camera – Winner: EVO 4G LTE
- Calculator – Winner: iPhone 4S
- Dictionary – Winner: EVO 4G LTE
- Flixster – Winner: EVO 4G LTE
- ScoreCenter – Winner: EVO 4G LTE
Browser comparison: In this test, I load up a couple of websites on each phone at the same time (on the same Wi-Fi network with history and cache wiped) to see which loads faster.

So, which phone is faster out of the two?
The HTC EVO 4G LTE is unanimously faster than the iPhone 4S. So for those of you Sprint customers who are considering these two phones, if speed is one of your highest priorities, then I’d suggest the EVO 4G LTE. Not only does it perform faster when booting up, opening apps, and loading web pages, it also runs on Sprint’s 4G LTE network which will give you much faster data speeds than the iPhone.
