Android’s Voice Search vs. Siri On The iPhone 4S
A while back, I did a comparison between Siri, Voice Actions, and Tellme. Siri was the clear winner in that test, but Google’s Voice Actions fared pretty well and came in a close second. But now with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Voice Actions (or Voice Search) is ready for a rematch. Will it have enough to finally take the voice assistant throne, or will Siri remain the king (or should I say queen)? Find out below:
Asking for the weather: I asked both Voice Actions and Siri “what’s the weather like?” I got the correct response from both, getting a five day forecast based off of my location. I followed up my initial question with “will it rain tommorow?” and again both voice assistants responded correctly saying “No.” On both of these questions, Voice Actions gave me the answer significantly faster than Siri did.
Asking “When was Barack Obama born?”: I asked both assistants “when was Barack Obama born?” and again both of them responded the right way giving me the answer I was looking for (August 4, 1961). The major difference between the two was that Voice Actions gave me a picture of president Obama to go along with my question and also loaded it much faster.
Asking “How tall is Michael Jordan?”: When I asked this question, only Voice Actions responded with the answer I was looking for (6 feet 6 inches). Siri didn’t know the answer, but directed me to a Google search which of course gave me the answer (basically it got it from the same source as did Voice Actions).
Asking for a sports score: When I asked “what was the score to the Angel’s game last night?” only Voice Actions responded appropriately giving me the score of the last game. Siri only offered to do a web search, however Siri will be able to answer this correctly in iOS 6.
Asking “What’s the speed of light in MPH?”: With this question, Voice Actions gave us its response in almost as fast as its answer (670 616 629 mph). Siri, on the other hand, gave me some kind of formula that wasn’t in line with what I was looking for.
Asking it to text someone: Both Siri and Voice Actions responded correctly to my command, however just like with all of the other test questions Voice Actions did it a lot quicker.
Setting a reminder: Again, both voice assistants responded correctly here. However the difference (other than Voice Action’s speed) was that on Android the reminder will be set automatically after a few seconds. This is something I prefer, because I hate having to confirm everything I say. By the time I confirm it, it would have been faster doing it myself. Of course, Voice Actions gives you an option to cancel (for a few seconds) just in case it got it wrong.
So, who is the king (or queen) of voice assistants?
Voice Actions. Based off of the questions we asked, Voice Actions was not only more accurate, but it was also a lot faster. Sure, 3-5 seconds may not seem like a long time, but you add that up over time and it can really make a difference. I mean, we are using our voice to do things most of the time because we want it to be quicker than having to type it out, right?
