86 Percent Of Sprint’s Handset Sales In Q4 Were Smartphones

We all know that smartphones are becoming more and more popular every day, but actually seeing the numbers behind  just how popular they’re becoming (at least at Sprint) is still somewhat surprising. Sprint reported that 86% of its phone sales in the 4th quarter of 2011 were smartphones. This extremely high rate is most likely thanks to the iPhone, which Sprint sold 1.8 million of in the last quarter of 2011.

Sprint also said that 66 percent of its subscriber base used smartphones, giving it the highest rate of smartphone usage amongst the major carriers in the United States.  Just to help put that number into perspective, 66 percent means 36.3 million subscribers (of Sprint’s 55 million total) are using smartphones today. And that’s just one carrier, which is only the 3rd largest in the nation.
