How To Set A Notification Sound For Text Messages (for Android)

4

What good is a notification sound if you can’t tell the difference between whether or not the notification was for an e-mail, a text message, a calender event, or a system alert? Where most people get confused when it comes to setting a specific ringtone for text messages is when they try to do it from the system settings screen.

From the system settings, you can set a notification sound but the problem is that it applies for all notifications. Therefor in this guide, we’ll show you how to set a notification sound that will apply only to your text messages. Just follow the step by step directions below:

  1. Open your text messaging app.
  2. From the main messaging screen, press menu>settings.
  3. In the settings menu, look for an option along the lines of “Notification Sound.”
  4. From there, you will be able to choose a specific alert that will apply only for your text messages.

Is there an App that can control notifications for text or SMS messages independent of email notifications.
Specfically, I currently have different tones set using the Android OS for different email accounts, and a different tone for SMS/MMS messages. BUT, I would like to silence the email tones nightly, but the the text messages. As it seems that these all fall under notification it doesn’t seem possible with any of the Apps I have seen so far.

there is no prompt for setting a different notification tone than the ones already offered. Is there a way to add a tone?
