Internet Not Working? How To Turn Data Back On (for Android)

Can you make phone calls and text, but for some reason can’t go on Facebook, e-mail, or the web? In other words, is your internet not working on your Android phone? If so, there is a good chance that your phone is not connected to the data network. Below are two step by step guides (just in case one method doesn’t work) to get you back to smartphone internet bliss:

From The Settings Menu:

  1. From the home screen, press the menu key and then go to settings.
  2. From the settings menu, scroll and find “Wireless & Networks” or something similar (same place where you turn on bluetooth and wifi).
  3. From the “Wireless & Networks” menu, look for “Mobile Networks” or something similar.
  4.  From there, look for an option that says “Packet Data” or something similar and check the box if it is unchecked.

From The Power Menu:

If the method above didn’t work, or wasn’t available, try this:

  1. From the home screen, press and hold the power button.
  2. A pop up box should come up with a few options.
  3. Look for “Data Network Mode” or something along those lines.
  4. Click the “Data Network Mode” option, which will either toggle on or off the data network (depending on where it was).

Okay, so this happens to most people by accident for one reason or another (they tend to claim the phone did it by itself). But there is a hidden benefit to doing this on PURPOSE. For example, say somebody needs to borrow your phone but you are worried that they will go on your Facebook and post something stupid. No problem! Just turn the data network off and they won’t even be able to connect but they will still be able to make the phone call and text people. Pretty cool stuff, eh?

Try to restart the phone itself (turn it off and then on again) and see if that does the trick. If it doesn’t, and your using a CDMA phone, try to Update PRL (found in the about phone settings). As a last resort, do a hard reset (which is what most phone carriers have you do as a basic troubleshoot). Make sure to back up your data first though.

    • Jai…

The issue is probably due to poor signal strength from the network. it might not be the phone or any of the settings on it… just to be sure.. check if there are any antivirus programs or firewalls blocking or monitoring your phone internet. if not it is definitely the Cellphone service provider. try connecting with Wi-Fi… and check the speeds…

Try taking out the battery for a while. If that does not work, take out the SIM card for a few minutes and turn it back on. I took mine to the Verizon store today and after a 45 minute conversation, they put the SIM card in a different phone. When I was looking at new phones, I put it back in mine, and a few minutes later it worked!

Thanks! I turned data off because I kept getting a message that gave me the choice of allowing data roaming or ignoring the message. Ignoring the message resulted in the message returning again and again. I was not using the net – it was probably some Galaxy S4 bloatware. Then I could find no obvoius way to turn it back on. Gee thanks! I am probably going to get a tablet with a data plan and dump the smart phone.
